The iOS15.0 and WatchOS 8.0 updates have officially released to the public! This means you can officially download them to your devices. Doing so is very simple, all you need to do on iOS is navigate to Settings, then General, then Software Update. Allow the Software Update page to load and press on install. It will ask for your passcode, if you have one set and automatically download and install the update.
For WatchOS you will want to put your watch on the charger, navigate to the Watch app and go to General then Software Update. Just like the phone, allow the page to load and then press on install. Again it will ask for your passcode, if you have one set, and then automatically download and install the update.
Besides updated security enhancements for both iPads, iPhones, and Watches, there is a whole slew of new features.
One of my favorite new features has to do with navigation.
As you can see on the left, there is a new screen while you are navigating and are using your Apple Watch. You can very easily exit a navigation with the X in the bottom right. The middle icon shows you the map like it would/should on your iPhone and then the 3 dots in the bottom-left are for additional options like changing your route. This screen is a lot better than the one in WatchOS7. It is easier to see what is next. The only thing I don’t like is if you have an Always-on-Display (Series 4 or above) and have it turned on, if you happen to glance down quickly at your watch the “0.7 mi” (in my picture) turns to “-.- mi” and you have to turn your watch to get rid of it. That is an additional second or two that your eyes are off the road and could definitely cause some issues.
Besides that the Apple Watch has 2 new watch faces which look pretty good. ANy additional watch faces are always greatly appreciated!
Another new feature I use daily/nightly/as often as I can, are the new focus modes.
The focus modes I use are “Work”, “Fitness” and “Sleep”. Rarely do I use “Do Not Disturb”. These focus modes are everything I’ve been wanting in Do Not Disturb (DND) modes.
Sleep I use every night, it is my favorite as I am able to put my watch, iPhone and iPad in silent mode every night so only calls from my favorites list (or those that call 2+ times in a row within 3 minutes) come through. I use sleep mostly because it is able to put my iPad in silent mode. Having to do my iPad separately every night was so annoying so I wouldn’t do it and sometimes would get woken up by the sound of it going off, if I forgot to leave it in another room. I am incredibly thankful that Apple added these features to this mode.
Fitness I use while I am working out. It does similar to sleep except allows for a few more notifications from Discord or Twitter to come through.
Work I use while I work. I do not have a set schedule so this one I turn on manually. Sometimes I forget though. I do have personalized home screens for each Focus Mode and that is another feature I love.
It is nice to be able to duplicate widgets and such on your home screen now so that you can have certain screens while certain modes are enabled. This helps me stay focused on working or keeps me from checking my phone so much when I am supposed to be sleeping or working out.
While the new wallpapers did not come in the update, they will be linked at the bottom of this article. My favorite is the pink, purple, and dark blue one. This is my current setup on my iPhone 11.
Day Mode (no focus mode enabled)
This setup works well for me as I have everything I need right at my fingertips. Anything I don’t need is either a widget (behind CARROT Weather) or easily searchable.
There are other new features to iOS15, like changes in splash screens, new icons and much more but I’m sure you have read about those already. If you haven’t, I recommend checking out Brandon Butch on YouTube or just googling “iOS15” as that will give you tons of articles.
As I said earlier, here are the wallpapers I promised!
